PUREZA a film by Renato barbieri | Brazil 2019 | 100 min, in competition at Siff 2020 in September as European Premiere.
The film is based on a true story and tells the story of (Pureza), who, having had no news from his son, Abel, who left for the gold mines in the south of Pará, sets off to look for him, with few clothes and few savings. He retraces Abel's journey back, gets hired as a cook on a farm and ends up discovering a system of exploitation and kidnapping of rural workers kept in conditions of slavery. Pureza, decides to flee and report the facts to the federal authorities, fighting against a well-rooted and perverse system. Although with many difficulties, the battle of Pureza will lead to the liberation of thousands of workers from the situation of the so-called "modern slavery" or "debt slavery".
The first shot is that of the barren, arid, dusty land of Brazil. Then, a pickaxe, a fracture. Demolish to rebuild. The earth and men: this is Pureza's mission. In the name a destiny, purity.
Pureza is a brave mother. Abel, his 21-year-old son, decided to abandon the unprofitable and tiring family business - the production of bricks - to seek a better fate on the farms, in the heart of the Amazon. When Pureza has no news for months, he will embark on a journey into the Brazilian hinterland that will prove to be a descent into the underworld. Abel's search soon became the discovery of a slave-keeping system of corporals who exploit, mistreat and kill field workers, unable to leave, poorly paid or never paid. In the criminal plots, even the corrupt government plays its important part. For these workers at the end of their strength, Pureza acts as a mother: she looks after them and takes care of them, secretly from the bosses.
His purity is a virginity of purpose, his attention is love in the form of water and food. Its power is human pietas. The silent battle of Pureza is the drop that digs the rock, the pickaxe, the fracture in the barren land. His revolution is a position taken from below - like Renato Barbieri's low shot shots - which will lead to the collapse of a real criminal network of the earth.
The raw and honest interpretations, such as Barbieri's narration of images of the true story of Pureza Lopez Loyola give back all the pathos, all the effort, all the pain, all the strength and all the hope of being able to change things 'simply'. Starting from a house door closed behind you, to start a journey of search and liberation, so that human beings can return to being human.
